Viktor Zubik

Figure skating and synchro skating season is high on the horizon. So here we have a recent cover shoot for Taitoluistelu, the main Finnish figure skating magazine.

This is Viktor Zubik, a young and very promising skater for HSK, (Helsingfors Skridskoklubb), he won the Nordic boys championship in February this year. Viktor spoke very good english so we were able to chat about music and playing guitar, Viktor likes to play as much bass guitar as he can in between the intense training schedules.

My good friend and work colleague Kaisa, (the editor of Taitoluistelu) and I picked Viktor up after his training at Salmisaari ice hall, whisking him away to Lauttassari, a much more ornate part of town that would provide us with a better background than a parking lot that looked like an excavation site for The Lost City Of Atlantis.

The only issues with Lauttasaari was the intense August sea side wind which nearly took my softbox from out of my hand and into the heavens. Thankfully, Elina Paasonen, my very good buddy and fellow photographer working with the Finnish newspaper Aamulehti, arrived and kindly helped out, preventing anymore Mary Poppins style take offs. Kiitoksia paljon Elina!

I really like the following shot but we all agreed that it was far too moody for a cover. The above frame being the chosen article.

Lighting-wise, the trusty workhorse, a Profoto AcuteB 600R with D4 head and 90cm softbox triggered via the wizards pocket.

All in all, nothing else flew off and the shoot was successful.

Viktor was a really great guy and I look forward to working with him some more this season.
