Ride The Lighting*

I’ve been hankering after more music shoots and I’m plenty chuffed to report I have yet another band shoot for your perusal.
This time all the natural stuff goes straight out the window. We’re going ham on FX…
I have had the pleasure in working with these fine gentlemen from ROO before hand, during June 2011. This time around I was very pleased to have my good friend Eero with me, a very talented visual wizard with an equal appetite for carving up the norm and adding some warp factor ten.

All the shots were taken inside a large studio in Porvoo while the band were involved in a recording session. We couldn’t disturb all the microphones set around the instruments so we set up carefully and shot everything against a black curtain. Eero helped me craft a rather elaborate lighting plan with the intention to create a HD composite.

For composites, I prefer to shoot against a dark background if the composite is themed around something that’s going to be dark and vice versa if it is intended to have a bright background. The masking is not only much faster but also more believable. Simply shoot a group shot for reference and then grab individuals of each member separately.

All of us were thrown somewhat of a curve ball when one member left the band. It was indeed a shame but as far as the usefulness of the shoot and the work we had all put in, the composite only needed altering slightly to maintain it’s purpose.

A huge thanks to Eero for all the help and it was awesome to be working with you again.

I hope for more!
